Why are children's samples important?

From your blood, scientists study how the human body works. Your sample can help scientists to:

• understand diseases better
• find better ways to treat children
• help people live healthier lives in the future

Who can take part in the Biobank?

Both adults and children can take part in the Biobank. For you to take part, both of your parents (or guardians) must give their consent.

But if you are at least 7 years old, your opinion must be taken into account too. That is why it is explained to you what the Biobank is, and you can say whether you want to become a participant.

What do Biobank participants do?

First, your parents fill in a questionnaire about your health. Then the Biobank will invite you to come and give a blood sample.

How much blood will be taken during the visit?

Only a very small amount of blood will be taken – about a teaspoon (or a little more, depending on your age).

After the first time, a sample may be taken every few years, so that scientists can see how your body changes as you grow.

Will it hurt?

You may briefly feel a little prick, but it lasts only a moment. The nurse will make sure everything is as gentle as possible.

Will my data be safe?

Yes! Your samples and information are kept very securely in Vilnius University's data repositories.

When scientists use the data for research, they:

• will not know that the sample is yours
• will use only coded data

What happens when I grow up?

When you turn 18, you will be able to decide for yourself:

• ✔ to keep taking part in the Biobank
• or
• ✔ to stop taking part.
