About the Biobank

The Biobank of Lithuanian Population and Rare Disorders collects biological samples from the Lithuanian population and related personal health information, and provides access to them to researchers for scientific research purposes.

Biobank sample storage
Laboratory work

Lithuanian and foreign scientists can use the Biobank as a library: instead of looking for new volunteers for each research project, scientists can use the high-quality samples and anonymized health information already collected in the Biobank, sharing the information obtained during scientific research with the Biobank each time, thus continuously increasing the scientific value and benefit of the stored samples and data to Lithuanian society. By analyzing health information and the results of biological sample tests during their research, scientists can discover new risk factors for diseases, develop new ways to improve public health, new methods for diagnosing and treating diseases, new medicines, or new ways to prevent diseases. Biomedical research conducted by scientists may reveal information that is important to your health, which the Biobank, with your consent, would pass on to You or Your family doctor, which could potentially help to provide You with more effective healthcare services in order to prevent or alleviate the identified health disorder.

By collecting a large number of biological samples and continuously adding health information related to the samples, the Biobank will facilitate and improve the organization and conduct of scientific research: it will be possible to conduct large-scale, more reliable, and more diverse scientific research that is relevant to improving the health of Lithuanian society and contributing to international scientific efforts to create new medical knowledge.
